Preservatives To Avoid in Foods and Cosmetics

Preservatives To Avoid in Foods and Cosmetics

It's interesting how the European Food Safety Authority deem certain ingredients illegal for use yet they are still used in North America.  What one should consider is that children have a smaller body surface than adults so these chemicals affect them more. However, this list, while not exhaustive, represent the list that should be avoided:

BHT (Butylated Hydroxtoluene)

This is a lab-made chemical used to preserve food's shelf life. It is commonly found in regular cereals, cake mixes, chewing gum and many more.  It is claimed to be an antioxidant but is a true endocrine disruptor and does cause thyroid changes and affects overall development. It is known to be a carcinogen.

BHA (Butylated Hydroxyanisole)

This is also deemed an antioxidant but lab-made.  It is used in processed meets, cereals and skin care.  It is also known to be a carcinogen. Its detrimental to the circulatory and reproductive systems.

TBHQ (Butylhydroquinone)

This is an additive used to preserve foods from discolouration like frozen foods, fast foods, and crackers to name a few. It has shown to cause tumours in rats and its also been found to cause vision issues in humans. It can cause liver enlargement and is a neurotoxin.

Sodium Benzoate

This is an odourless powder which is made by combining benzoic acid and sodium hydroxide. It is used in processed foods and most beverages to extend the shelf life. It can pose a cancer risk To boot, under high heat it can form benzene which is linked to blood cancers. It has also been linked to ADHD in kids and adults.

Potassium Sorbate

Most commercial potassium sorbate is produced synthetically by reacting sorbic acid with potassium hydroxide.  Natural potassium sorbate exists but highly unlikely used. It comes from the moutain ash berries. Potassium sorbate can have a side effect on human health by causing inflammation and causing an exacerbation of diabetes and triggering the gradual development of cancer over time.  This chemical is used in foods and skin care.

Parabens and Phthalates

Parabens and phthalates are chemicals used in food and cosmetics, raising concerns about potential health risks. While parabens are primarily used as preservatives, phthalates are commonly used as plasticizers. Some studies suggest parabens can disrupt hormones and potentially increase cancer risk, while phthalates are linked to hormonal imbalances, reproductive issues. There are five specific parabens that are banned in Europe for use in cosmetics and they include: isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, benzylparaben, phenylparaben and pentylparaben. Additionally, certain phthalates are also restricted or banned from the European Union for use in cosmetics and other products like toys and childcare items.

In conclusion, there are many chemicals used in our foods and cosmetics and we should study them. It is best to reduce the amount of exposure from them.  Be aware that if a country bans a particular ingredient there is good reason for it to be detrimental to health of all life.
